FOOTNOTEJohn G. Carter attested for the Durham Light Infantry and served with them during the Great War in the Hedjaz theatre of War from 28 March 1915. He subsequently transferred to the East Yorkshire Regiment, and then to the Indian Unattached List., and saw further service during the Third Afghan War
