About this item

A very nice original British Army Royal Marine Commando beret dating from 1948.

This pattern of beret was introduced during the Second World War to be worn by Army Commandos as well as Royal Marine Commandos. They have been synonymous with Commandos since their inception and are still worn today. This example dates from 1948 but is identical to wartime examples in every way.

The beret is made from a lovat green coloured wool and features a black coloured leather sweatband. Two black painted metal eyelets are fitted to one side of the hat which act as ventilation holes. It has been fitted with a brass King's crown Royal Marines cap badge which appears to be original to the hat. The interior is lined in a black coloured cotton to which the original markings are still present. These include the maker's name of 'Kangol Wear Limited' below which is the 1948 date and the War Department broad arrow. The size is marked as 6 3/4 and there is also a War Department acceptance stamp which is surmounted by the letter 'R' which confirms the year of manufacture.

The beret is in with only some very small flaws related to age including some small moth grazes as illustrated. Overall it displays very well and has clearly never been worn or issued.

A very nice example which is in great condition.

This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
