About this item

An original RAF officer's peaked cap which dates from the Second World War. This cap belonged to 48283 Horace Gordon Willson who served with the RAF during WW2. He was made Flight Lieutenant in late 1941 suggesting that he had service prior to this date with a more junior rank.

This pattern of cap was introduced in the inter-war period and stayed in service for many years. Various details denote this as a wartime made example including the green coloured under peak which is considered to be one of the hallmarks of an early war produced cap. The pronounced 'D' shaped peak and narrow black coloured patent leather sweatband are other typical wartime traits. To the front of the cap is an original padded Kings Crown RAF Officers cap badge which is in good condition.

Inside the cap the original label is still present and bears typical late 1930s to mid 1940s graphics. The maker's name of 'J. S. Wilson' is present and the original owner has added his name and number which reads '48283 Willson' which may offer the prospect of further research.

The overall condition of the hat is very good as can be seen from the photographs. The cap has clearly been worn and the interior shows some signs of wear. There is a break along the fold of the green rexine material to the underside of the peak although this is not visible when the cap is worn or displayed. The hat has taken on a very characterful shape over the years, most likely from wear which can be seen in the pictures. It still displays well but please take time to study these before purchasing bear bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have other small issues commensurate with age.

The cap is a smaller size which will fit around a size 6 5/8 head.

A good original early war cap which was worn in the conflict and would make a nice addition to any RAF collection.

This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
