About this item
An excellent collection of artefacts relating to the German Occupation of Jersey.
Without doubt the pinnacle of the collection is a superbly painted tribute M35 German Helmet which, along with a collection of Jersey occupation stamps, was sold in the 1950’s to tourists at the Café Capri opposite Gorey Castle.
Believed to have been hand painted to reflect the Liberation at the premises of F J Laurent, coachworks in St. Helier, the Helmet is accompanied by a hand written letter sent with it to a collector in Jersey where the seller confirms it was given to him as a child in the 1950’s.
A very good example in itself, the Helmet is a Q62 with a lot number of 20972. The decal is by Ed Strache, found on reissued M35 Helmets which this is. There is no chinstrap and the liner remains soft.
Amongst the paperwork is a photograph of the Café Capri and a mounted collection of Occupation stamps in very good collection, also sold at the café. There are two good copy photographs of the burial of two RAF airman at Mont a L’abbe cemetery and two copies of the Liberation supplement along with various other paperwork and a Staes of Jersey issued civilian Gas Mask.
Overall, a lovely collection and a great reminder for me of growing up in the Island.
