The 93rd (Sutherland Highlanders) Regiment of Foot played a crucial role in the Crimean War, particularly at the Battle of Balaclava (1854), where they earned their legendary reputation as The Thin Red Line. This term originated when the regiment, dressed in their distinctive red tunics, stood firm against a Russian cavalry charge with only two ranks deep—a feat of discipline and bravery that became a symbol of steadfastness in British military history.

The bonnet badge you describe, with its Victorian Crown, "Sutherland Highlanders" circlet, 93 numerals, and Thistle Wreaths, is a fine example of pre-Crimean War regimental insignia. The inclusion of the Cape of Good Hope Battle Honour suggests it dates from after the regiment’s service in the Cape Frontier Wars (1851–1853) in South Africa but before their Crimean deployment.

Such badges are highly collectible, especially among British military and Highland regiment enthusiasts.
