About this item

The Royal Highland Fusiliers Pipers silvered plaid brooch. The regiment was formed as the Royal Highland Fusiliers (Princess Margaret's Own Glasgow and Ayrshire Regiment) on 20 January 1959 by the amalgamation of the Royal Scots Fusiliers with the Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment). The Royal Highland Fusiliers, abbreviated as 'The RHF', were part of the Scottish Division. They became the second Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland

Design and Symbolism
The brooch serves as a heraldic bridge between the two units that amalgamated to form "The RHF": the Royal Scots Fusiliers and the Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment).

The Central Device: The centerpiece features the monogram of the Highland Light Infantry superimposed on a flaming grenade, which is the traditional symbol of the Royal Scots Fusiliers.

The Star of the Order of the Thistle: This central device is set against the Star of the Order of the Thistle, a core element of Scottish military heraldry.

The Motto: Surrounding the central grenade is a scroll bearing the motto "Nemo Me Impune Lacesset" (No one provokes me with impunity).

The Border: The outer rim of the brooch is decorated with a detailed wreath of thistles, further emphasizing its Scottish heritage.

Construction Details
As shown in the reverse view, the brooch is designed for functional military wear:

Finish: The brooch features a silvered finish, typical for the dress uniforms of regimental pipers.

Fastening: The back of the brooch utilizes a sturdy, long horizontal pin and C-clasp mechanism. This design is necessary to secure the heavy plaid fabric worn over the piper's shoulder.

Structure: The item has an openwork design where the central Star of the Thistle is suspended within the outer circular wreath.
