About this item
An unissued and virtually Mint example of a 1941 dated Scottish Balmoral Bonnet, also known as the Tam-o’ – Shanter.
A good size 7 1/8 the Khaki drab wool retains all the original colour and is completely free from stains or other damage. No badge has ever been fitted and the khaki coloured Toori remains in place.
Inside, the off white quilted lining is without damage with all stampings including the WD inspectors stamp “P”, clear.
This type of headdress originated in 1915 for wear by Scottish troops in combat as a replacement for the Glengarry and Atholl Bonnets and continued in use long after the Second World War.
The last images shows a group of No.2 Commando taken at Ary in 1941. My father -in-Law, Fred Mather is pictured third from the left as you view the picture. The finest man I ever met, his brother is on his left next to him. Both survived the war.
A superb example in a good size.
