Scarce Original 1941 Dated First Pattern Dispatch Rider's Helmet

A very original early Second World War first pattern British Army Dispatch Riders Pulp Helmet in excellent condition and clearly dated 1941. 

This pattern of helmet was introduced into service in 1939 and was the first helmet specifically produced by the British Army for motorcyclists. It is often referred to as the 'pulp' helmet and is similar in design to civilian motorcycle helmets produced before the war. The helmet was made by Christy & Co. Ltd., London retains its original khaki green coloured paint to the exterior which has survived extremely well.

The leather section is also in excellent condition and is soft and pliable with no serious flaws or damage. The leather chinstrap is also good with some dryness and it fastens with a brass single prong buckle. Ear flaps are located to the side of each helmet. They fasten with nickel plated press studs which are maker marked 'Newey'. 

Inside the helmet is again in very clean condition. The leather sweatband is still the light buff colour it would have been when new and the maker's stamps are very clear. The markings are also still very fresh and crisp including the makers initials of 'C.C.L', The size of 6 7/8 and the 1941 date. The reverse of the sweatband bears the War Department inspectors stamp which is surmounted by the letter 'P' which denotes 1941 as the year of manufacture. The only flaw to the helmet is damage to the horse hair in the top of the helmet which has missing sections and signs of moth damage although this does not detract from the helmet when displayed in any way. 

Overall this is an excellent example of a very rare to find early war helmet which is undoubtedly missing from many collections.
