Between 26 May and 4 June 1940, the Dunkirk evacuation began, also known as Operation Dynamo, and also known as the Miracle of Dunkirk, a WW2 rescue mission where over 338,000 Allied troops were saved from the beaches of Dunkirk, France. German forces had advanced through France and trapped British and Allied soldiers in the coastal town of Dunkirk. With the port blocked and under heavy attack, a call was made for civilian boats to assist in the evacuation. Thousands of local sailors using small boats crossed the English Channel to rescue the soldiers.

Winston Churchill’s "We Shall Fight on the Beaches" speech, delivered to the House of Commons on June 4, 1940, addressed the Dunkirk evacuation, calling it a "colossal military disaster" while celebrating the rescue of over 338,000 Allied troops. He pledged unwavering resistance against Nazi Germany, vowing to fight on beaches, streets, and hills, and never surrender.
