NS66 M42 Single Decal Helmet with Reversed Stampings

An exceptionally nice and really rather rare example of a Single Decal Heer M42 Helmet with reversed NS stampings

A large size 66, the Helmet is in overall very good condition, the undamaged shell with better than 90% of the original factory field grey lightly granulated finish. The decal is exceptional, completely without loss and appearing to be an early grey lined eagle, perhaps by Huber, Jordan & Koerner

Inside, the liner remains clean and undamaged and personalised to Gefr. Gorges 1.D  X11 00845B. (1st Kompany Battalion D X11 of the 216th Infantry Division) The chinstrap is very good and dated 1940.

In keeping with most M42s, the stampings are on the rear flare of the shell and read SN 66, 6821. In revision 9 of Brian Ice’s book on lot numbers (page 568) he lists lot 6821 as the only lot to feature the reversed NS maker’s stamp. Furthermore, only one helmet features with a Heer decal which he describes as “Bright”. It is possible this is the very helmet he inspected for the reference.

I have not researched the soldier, but the Feldpost number shows good detail:

(Mobilmachung-1.1.1940) 3. Kompanie Infanterie-Regiment 216,

(2.1.1940-27.4.1940) gestrichen, wurde Fp.Nr. 18147.D,

(28.4.1940-14.9.1940) Eisenbahn-Betriebs-Amt Hasselt,

(27.1.1942-14.7.1942) gestrichen, wurde Fp.Nr. 00821 A,

(1.8.1943-23.3.1944) 4.10.1943 Stab und 1.-4. Kompanie Bataillon D XII.

The 216th Infantry Division was active from 1939–1943. It served on the Western Front in 1940 and later took part in the Eastern Front campaign, being involved in the disastrous Battle of Kursk.

A very good Helmet with good research potential.
