About this item
A good example of an early US M1 Fixed Bale Helmet dating it from between 1941 and 1943 when the improved swivel bales were introduced.
The shell is very good although perhaps oiled at some time giving something of a sheen to the original factory drab olive finish. The front flair is stamped with a heat of steel number, but no maker’s initial is obvious. The chinstrap is very good and the rim is finished with a stainless steel front seam band.
To the back vertical stress cracks remain apparent, typical of the early helmets.
The high pressure liner is by Capac and clearly displays the company logo in the crown. It is without damage but perhaps repainted at some time in its life. The leather liner chinstrap is intact and supple, the snap buckle working well. Suspension straps are held by a twisted shoestring allowing for fine size adjustment but both the clip in sweatband and nape strap are not present.
