About this item
An excellent example of a WW1 British Officers Cap, Forage Service Dress formerly belonging to Lieutenant James Windsor Lewis of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards who was killed at Ypres on the 6th June 1916.
Constructed I believe in Gabardine, the cap follows the classic shape of the officer’s private purchase Caps of the period. The circular brim is free from moth, the piping stiffened with the typical cane band. To the underside of the brim there are two pairs of brass ventilation grommets.
The mohair hatband is wide with an impressive hand embroidered bullion thread leek Cap Badge of the Welsh Guards.
The peak or visor is patent leather decorated with strands of gold bullion threads, the adjustable chinstrap in black leather secured by plain brass buttons.
Inside, the peak is lined in green, the sweatband carrying the maker’s details and with red cotton cord for fine adjustment. The officer’s initials, J.W. L are impressed, and the head lining is in golden rayon.
On 17 August 1915 the 1st Battalion sailed for France to join the Guards Division to commence its participation in the First World War. Its first battle was some months after its initial arrival, at Loos on 27 September 1915.
