    About this item

WW2 RAF 2ND PATTERN D-TYPE FLYING HELMET. A lovely used example of the D-type flying helmet, worn in hotter, sunnier climates by RAF, USAAF and Commonwealth airmen.

An interesting D-type flying helmet, it has been modified by the removal of the neck flap normally found on standard D-type flying helmets. This is pretty common to see on used D-type helmets, and we have had several examples recently with the same modification. This has been done rather well but upon close inspection you can still see where the flap was attached.

The rest of the helmet is in good used condition, it has definitely had a life and is rather soiled. However the helmet does'nt have any damage, holes, rips or tears to the material we can see. The helmet with goggles straps, loom straps and buckle all still in place. The chinstrap still present, retaining good elasticity with some soiling. The helmet is fitted with a set of gosport tubes, these appear to be unmarked. The left gosport tube has some wear, and the fabric covering of the tube has some loss and fraying as can be seen in the photos. The rubber earcups in good condition, covered with the remains of cellotape.

Moving inside again we see the helmet has been worn and is somewhat soiled. However there is no damage to the white silk material lining. Both ear donuts in good condition. Unfortunately we can't see any stamps or markings, possibly these were lost when the neck flap was removed. Regardless we can estimate the size to be approximately a size 57 UK hat size, fitting our display head here snugly. Overall a good used and modified example of the ever popular and desirable D-type flying helmet. Ideal for any RAF collection, museum or display.
