    About this item

A very rare inter-war British Army dismounted pattern single breasted greatcoat which most likely dates from the 1930s.

This pattern of coat was produced between the wars but only in very limited numbers making them scarce to find today. Whilst virtually unchanged from the pattern produced from 1916 until the end of the Great War, this is arguably a much rarer coat as it dates from the inter-war period. There are plenty of original pictures taken in France during 1939 and 1940 wearing single breasted greatcoats such as this but they are missing from many collections today.

The coat is made from the standard khaki green coloured wool serge and the front fastens with brass regimental buttons of the King's Own Royal Regiment. A number of battalions from this regiment were involved in the fighting in France during May 1940. There are two flapped pockets to the hips which feature a buttoning tab under the front. There is also an opening at the left hip which may suggest this was worn by a Warrant Officer? There is a half belt to the rear as well as a vent, both of which fasten with plastic buttons.

Inside the coat there is a hanging loop at the neck below which is a partial lining of white blanket wool. The sleeves are lined with a white material and there is a War Department acceptance stamp marked to this. The positioning of this in the sleeve is typical of early items produced during the Great War.

The coat is a small size which will suit a 34" chest and when laid flat it measures -

    Chest - 19 1/2"
    Inside arm - 17 3/4"
    Outside arm - 24 1/2"
    Shoulders - 17 1/2"
    Length at back - 43 1/2"

The coat is in good condition overall and displays well. It is still very wearable with no serious damage or flaws. There is however an area of damage below the right pocket and some more defects to the skirt which are illustrated in the pictures. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn coat which does have some small issues commensurate with age.

A very rare coat which is a must have for the serious BEF collector!
