    About this item

An original Royal Air Force Irvin Flying jacket dating from the early mid war period and in good condition.

This jacket is most likely an 'Irvin Suit' jacket and dates from approximately 1941 or 1942, based on the construction. The biggest indicator of age is the single vertical rear seam which is intersected by a parallel seam below the shoulders. Early war jackets only had the single seam and later war jackets have many more panels than this.

The jacket features a chromed leather outer shell which is in good condition and retains a good amount of its original finish. A 'Lightning' branded zipper is fitted to the front and is a period replacement. There is evidence of where the zip was moved across the inner flap to make the jacket a larger size at some stage (picture 11). The two sleeve zips are the originals however and are rare, high quality examples which were made by 'D.O.T' and are typically found on pre-war and early war jackets. Both of these zips retain their original leather pullers which is a nice feature. The large collar features chrome plated metal double 'dee' rings and the two hooks which the elastic collar strap attaches to are also present and again help to date the jacket. Under each arm are metal grommets which act as vent holes.

The jacket will suit around a 36" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat it measures -

    Chest - 21 1/2"
    Inside arm - 21 1/2"
    Outside arm - 24"
    Shoulders - 20 1/2"
    Length - 24"

The jacket is in good condition and displays well. There are no serious flaws or damage and all the zips function well. All the seams appear strong, the chromed leather retains most of its chrome finish with some small areas of crazing and the sheepskin is well intact and in good condition. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small issues commensurate with age.

A nice original early Second World War RAF flying jacket which is in great condition.
