Scarce Original 1945 Dated Mountain Sweater 'Commando Jumper' - Size 3

A scarce original British Army mountain sweater, often referred to as the 'Commando' sweater, which is clearly dated 1945. 

This pattern of sweater was introduced in 1942 and saw use with the SAS, Special Boat Service and Commando units, amongst others. It was originally produced as part of the specialist mountain uniform and equipment but was used by various specialist units during the war. This pattern stayed in service after the war for a number of decades under the designation 'Jersey, heavy'. The most interesting thing about this example is that it features the reinforced neckline and sleeves which has previously only been associated with the 1952 pattern example. This jumper was clearly made in the factory with all of these parts. It is a very rare example and almost certainly missing from most collections. 

The sweater is made from a machine knitted olive green coloured wool which features a ribbed pattern which allows it to expand. A lace is fitted at the neck which is clearly the original example. Inside the jumper the original label is still present and is bright and legible. It bears the maker's initials of 'G. B. Ltd' below which is the size of 3, the 1945 date and the War Department broad arrow.

When laid flat the jumper measures - 

Chest - 21 1/2" (pulls out to 23")
Inside arm - 19 1/2"
Outside arm - 22"
Shoulders - 21 1/2"
Length - 25"

The jumper is in good condition with some signs of wear and use. There are some small holes etc which are illustrated in the pictures. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-owned item which may have small issues commensurate with age. 

A very rare wartime dated sweater which is doubtless missing from many collections.
