The 79th Regiment of Foot, also known as The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, was a prestigious Scottish infantry regiment in the British Army13. The officer's dirk you're describing is a ceremonial dagger that was an important part of the Highland officer's uniform and equipment.
The dirk you mention is a Victorian-era piece crafted by Henry Wilkinson, a renowned London-based weapon manufacturer located in Pall Mall2. Wilkinson was known for producing high-quality military weapons and accessories during the 19th century.
The blade of this dirk is intricately engraved with an impressive list of battle honors, showcasing the regiment's long and distinguished history. These honors include:
Egypt (1801)
Egmont op Zee (1799)
Fuentes de Oñoro (1811)
Salamanca (1812)
Pyrenees (1813)
Nivelle (1813)
Nive (1813)
Toulouse (1814)
Peninsula (1808-1814)
Waterloo (1815)
Alma (1854)
Sevastopol (1854-1855)
Lucknow (1857)
Egypt 1882
Tel el-Kebir (1882)
Nile 1884-86
These battle honors span conflicts from the Napoleonic Wars to the Egyptian campaigns of the late 19th century, demonstrating the regiment's extensive service record.
The other side of the blade features the Cameron's regimental badge, which typically included elements such as the Sphinx (representing service in Egypt) and the regiment's motto "Aonaibh Ri Chéile" (Unite).
The dirk comes with its original case and a frog (a device used to attach the dirk to a belt), adding to its historical and collectible value. Such a well-preserved and historically significant piece would be of great interest to military historians and collectors of Scottish regimental memorabilia.
