This is an exceptionally fine, museum-quality example of a Late Victorian to Edwardian period Scottish Gordon Highlanders Officer's Dirk. Complete three-piece sets (dirk, companion knife, and companion fork).
1. The Regimental Badge & Heraldry
The throat of the scabbard features the post-1881 regimental pattern badge of The Gordon Highlanders (formed during the Childers Reforms of 1881 by the amalgamation of the 75th and 92nd Regiments of Foot).
The Saltire: The design is set against a cross of St. Andrew.
The Sphinx & "EGYPT": Inherited from the 75th Regiment of Foot, commemorating their service in the Egyptian Campaign of 1801.
The Royal Tiger & "INDIA": Also inherited from the 75th Foot, commemorating their historic 19 years of continuous, distinguished service in India (1788–1807).
The Wreath: The badge is beautifully framed by traditional Scottish thistles.
2. The Hilt and Pommel (Cairngorm)
The Grip: The handle is carved from bog oak or ebony in a traditional continuous basket-weave/interlace pattern, studded with small silver pins to enhance the grip and decoration.
The Pommel Setting: The top cap features highly ornate, openwork Acanthus leaves in silver, which crown the hilt.
The Stone: As noted, this is a genuine, beautifully faceted Cairngorm (a type of smoky quartz/citrine found in the Cairngorm mountains of Scotland). Its rich, natural amber color and the absence of foil-backing highlight its quality; cheaper or later reproduction models frequently used foil-backed colored glass.
3. The Scabbard and Companion Pieces
The Fittings: The silver-colored mounts (chape, locket, and mid-bands) are elegantly chased with matching thistle and oak leaf motifs. The blank central cartouches on the scabbard bands were intentionally left clear so an officer could have their personal initials or family crest engraved.
The Utensils: It is uncommon to find the companion bi-knife and fork surviving together with the main dirk, let alone matching the exact hilt and pommel styling of the parent weapon. They slot perfectly into the upper pockets of the leather-covered wood scabbard.
The Blade: The main blade features a classic single-edged design with a scalloped/notched spine (file-work) and a prominent fuller (groove) running down the center, which remains remarkably bright and clean.
This is a premium, authentic piece of Scottish military heritage. Because officers personally commissioned their uniform accoutrements from high-end silversmiths and uniform outfitters (such as William Anderson & Sons or Meyer & Mortimer), the craftsmanship on these pieces is incredibly precise.
