    About this item

These Pseudo Iron Cross's were made in Britain early in WW1 to raise funds for various soldiers charities, and to help mock the Germans, and highlight the early war atrocities they committed.

This is one of the harder to find, double sided examples. One side commemorates the German Navy's attack on Scarborough, Hartlepool, West Hartepool and Whitby on the morning of 16 December 1914.

The bombardment by the German High Seas Fleet Scouting Group (commanded by Admiral Franz von Hipper) lasted just over an hour and resulted in 137 civilians killed and 592 wounded.

The other side charts the German Army's destructive progress through Belgium and France in 1914, listing the cities of Rheims, Louvain and Amiens.

The Imperial War Museum page carries more details on these interesting medals. A link can be found HERE.
