About this item
Certificate known as “veterancy commission”, awarded to the disabled non-commissioned officer Michel MAIROL for 52 years of service.
Issued at the Royal Hôtel des Invalides on July 26, 1791.
At the upper left appears an oval medallion depicting two crossed swords.
The certificate bears the stamped signature of Louis Duportail, founder and commander of the American Corps of Engineers.
Before the arrival of Lafayette in America, Duportail had already joined the insurgent cause. Appointed colonel of engineers in July 1777, he soon became a trusted adviser to George Washington. An outstanding engineer during the Pennsylvania campaign, he particularly distinguished himself for his strategic insight in councils of war. Washington followed his recommendations and entrusted him with a key role in coordinating the joint operations conducted with Rochambeau and De Grasse, leading to the decisive victory at Yorktown.
Returning to France in 1783, he was appointed Minister of War in 1790.
Dimensions: 34.5 cm × 28 cm
Condition: Fair condition, with age-related patina.
