About this item
An original 1941 Pattern Mae West Life Preserver as used during the Second World War.
Replacing the earlier 1932 pattern Mae West shortly after the Battle of Britain, the 1941 pattern is now an iconic piece of flying clothing which is synonymous with the RAF during the Second World War. This pattern also saw extensive use with the Fleet Air Arm, Air Sea Rescue, Coastal Command and the USAAF amongst many others and today it is a must have for any serious collector.
The jacket is made from a yellow coloured cotton material and features a three button front. There are cotton tape ties which pass around the body and more are fitted to the lower edge which are fastened through the wearer's legs. To the right of this is a flapped pocket which houses the inflation lever, when fitted. This has had the front flap removed. The grab handles are still present and there is evidence of where the floating torch pocket has been removed. The zip at the rear looks to be a period replacement.
The vest retains its original label which is bright and legible. It bears the War Department broad arrow marking below which is the RAF stores number 22C/447 and the size of medium.
The life jacket is in good condition as can be seen in the pictures. There are some signs of age and use but overall it displays well with no serious flaws or damage. It is however a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small flaws commensurate with age so please take time to study the pictures before purchasing.
The life jacket comes complete with its original inflatable stole which is fitted inside the jacket. This has hardened with time and is out of shape but the hose is still in good condition which is the only visible part. It retains its covering to the tube and the mouthpiece is present and in good condition.
A nice good example which comes complete with a matching original bladder.
This is a vintage item which is ‘sold as seen’
