Original Second World War British War Office military plotting map, covering a particularly interesting section of the central Mediterranean including eastern Algeria, Tunisia, Sardinia and surrounding Mediterranean islands and coastline.

The sheet is titled:

ALGERIA N.W. 32½/4

Produced for the Geographical Section, General Staff (GSGS) as part of the large-scale military Plotting Series No. 4080.

The map states:

“Drawn at War Office and Heliographed at O.S. 1941.
Revised from M.D.R. 474, Edition of July 1944.”

This dates the revision to the latter stages of WWII and makes the geographical coverage especially relevant. Tunisia and the central Mediterranean were major Allied operational areas, while Sardinia, Sicily and the North African coastline were strategically important to Mediterranean air and naval operations.

The sheet includes Sardinia prominently at upper right, with locations including Sassari, Tempio Pausania, Cape Ferro and Tavolara Island. The Balearic Islands, including Majorca and Minorca, are also shown, together with the North African coastline and inland areas.

Printed predominantly in red, the map incorporates the characteristic military plotting grid, large compass/plotting circles, latitude and longitude, relief, settlements, communications and geographical features.

Original used condition with extensive period folding, creasing and some staining/discolouration along the principal folds. Minor edge wear, handling marks and small tears are present. Overall complete and displaying very well for an approximately 80-year-old military map. Please study photographs for condition.
