About this item
The German WW1 Iron Cross and the Imperial Austrian Austro-Hungarian War Medal were two separate military medals awarded during World War I.
The Iron Cross was a German military decoration that was established in 1813 and was awarded for bravery and military service. During World War I, the Iron Cross was awarded to soldiers of the German Empire and served as a symbol of German military prowess. The design of the Iron Cross included a silver or blackened iron cross pattée with the date "1914" on the obverse and "W" (for Wilhelm II) on the reverse, with the addition of oak leaves for higher levels of award.
The Imperial Austrian Austro-Hungarian War Medal was a military decoration awarded to soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire who had served in the First World War. The medal was designed by the Austrian artist Rudolf Marschall and was made of bronze. The obverse of the medal featured a portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I, while the reverse featured the words "FÜR KRIEGSDIENST 1914-1918" (For War Service 1914-1918), surrounded by a wreath.
