    About this item

The Cross of Honour of the German Mother (Ehrenkreuz der Deutschen Mutter) was a state decoration and civil order of merit in Nazi Germany, instituted on December 16, 1938. The award was created to recognize German women who bore children for the Third Reich, and it was intended to encourage motherhood and increase the birth rate.

The award came in three classes, and eligibility depended on the number of children a woman had borne. Women who had four or five children received the bronze cross, women who had six or seven children received the silver cross, and women who had eight or more children received the gold cross.

The cross was a simple design, consisting of a black and white enameled swastika within a golden wreath. The reverse of the cross bore the date "16 Dezember 1938", the day the award was instituted. The ribbon of the award was a deep blue with white stripes on the edges.

After World War II, the Cross of Honour of the German Mother was abolished, and it is now considered a controversial symbol of Nazi ideology. Today, it is largely a collectible item among historians and collectors of Nazi-era memorabilia.
