The Army Emergency Reserve (AER) was formally established on the 6th September 1952 as the revived Supplementary Reserve and renamed the AER in 1953. Members of the AER were volunteer reservists who could join after completing their two years of National Service or technical/specialist volunteers, all were committed to training for two weekends and a 15-day camp for each year of service. Pay allowances and travelling expenses were paid for all training periods attended. The AER Regulations stated the organisation’s roles as:   “(a) To provide a source of manpower for service outside the United Kingdom when no proclamation calling out the Army Reserve has been issued, but an emergency is imminent.   (b) To provide a source of manpower including specialists and part-time National Servicemen which, for various reasons; cannot form part of the Regular Reserve or the Territorial Army.”   As part of the general civil defence reforms and cut-backs, the AER was disbanded in 1967.
