    About this item

French Bolero Jacket model 1879 of a sergeant-fourrier of the 1st Zouaves (Algiers)

Constructed in a dark blue cloth with braids, soutaches and madder cords, red tombôs, braids with golden lézarde. The Jacket is open fronted with 10 ornamental buttons to each sleeve. The lining is off white with one inside pocket and a stamp to the 1st Zouaves.

Overall condition is very good with some wear to the braids and a small number of minor moth holes.

The Zouaves were a class of light infantry regiments of the French Army serving between 1830 and 1962 and linked to French North Africa. The Zouaves were among the most decorated units of the French Army.

It was initially intended that the Zouaves would be a regiment of Berber volunteers from the Zwawa group of tribes in Algeria ("Zwawa" being the origin of the French term Zouave) who had gained an excellent reputation fighting for local rulers under the Ottoman Empire.
