About this item
WW2 RAF 1930 PATTERN SIDCOT FLYING SUIT. A nice used example of the Battle of Britain period 1930 pattern Sidcot flying suit, as worn by pilots and aircrew. This suit, being the 1930 pattern Sidcot, it has no accommodation for any electrically heated gloves or bootees. It simply is a flying suit that would have been worn over service dress, and also worn often with a fur liner.
This example is in good used condition. It's not too bad and displays well; it also looks better than the photos suggest! The green material of the suit is in good condition, but it is well faded from its original green colour. Most likely, this is from years of use and exposure to the sun, probably from flying above the clouds! Regardless, it is now more of a Tan colour all over, but the original green material colour is evident inside the pockets and underneath the vent on the back.
There are some areas of light damage to the suit, most noticeably around the ankle and lower leg area. There is some damage and loss of material on both of the lower legs, and we have tried to photograph this as best we can. So please check the photos out. If this suit were to be displayed, say on a mannequin, and displayed with a set of flying boots, this damage would not be immediately noticeable. On the upside, both ankle zips are, however, in good condition and working nicely, manufacturer-marked by Lightning.
Furthermore, there is some light soiling from use on both of the legs, but nothing too bad, most likely oil stains. The main zip is working well, but could do with some gentle lubrication just to get it running freely. Marked to the puller with the Lightning manufacturer stamp. The rest of the suit's zips are also in good working condition. On the reverse, we find the adjustable belt once again in good condition without issue.
Inside, we find the suit has its original label still, marked as a size 4 with details just below, also an A.M. crown marked and a nice date of 1940 still visible. Just below is an A.M. crown ink stamp, with a further size 4 stamp.
Overall, a nice example of this Battle of Britain era suit. Suitable for a Battle of Britain display, RAF museum, collection, or reenactor.
