About this item

An original Second World War United States Army Air Forces electrically heated Type F-1 flying suit.

This is the iconic one-piece electrically heated flying suit issued to USAAF aircrew for high-altitude operations during the early to mid years of the Second World War. The Type F-1 is synonymous with bomber crews of the 8th Air Force flying from bases in the United Kingdom during 1942 and 1943 and is one of the most recognisable and important items of wartime USAAF flying clothing.

The suit is constructed from a blue quilted wool outer shell with an electrically heated lining, designed to be worn over standard flying clothing and connected to the aircraft’s electrical system. It retains its original Talon brand zips throughout, including the main front opening and ancillary access zips, all of which are correct wartime fittings and a desirable feature in their own right.

The interior retains its original manufacturer’s label which bears the title of 'Suit, Pilots', below which are the words 'electrically heated 24 volts D.C., Type F-1, Size 36'. The Specification number of No. 94-312 and Order No. W535-AC-27402 are also present as is the maker's name of 'General Electric'. These contract details firmly place the suit within the wartime production period and are fully consistent with early USAAF heated flying clothing.

As intended, the suit features the integrated wiring loom and connection points for use with electrically heated gloves, socks and helmet, allowing the entire system to be powered in flight. This system was essential for aircrew operating in unpressurised bombers at extreme altitude over occupied Europe. The electrically heated wiring elements remain present internally; however, the external connection sockets have been removed at some point, as is commonly encountered with surviving examples.

The condition of the suit is good as can be seen in the pictures. It displays well with no serious flaws or damage although there are some signs of wear and age along with some holes as illustrated. Overall it is a good example but please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-owned which has some small flaw commensurate with age.

Overall, a highly evocative and historically significant piece of wartime USAAF flying equipment, closely associated with the men of the 8th Air Force and the daylight bombing campaign flown from the UK in 1942–1943.

This is a vintage item which is ‘sold as seen’
