For sale is an Incredibly Rare Pre WW1 1895 1st Edition Records And Badges Of The British Army By Henry Manners Chichester. This is in superb condition and has the original bookplate of Alan Graham Mutter. This book has 24 coloured plates and 230 illustrations in the text. 

  The preface of this book states:   “A concise record, be it that of a nation, a regiment, or an individual, does not—to the casual reader at least-bear evidence that any very great labour is involved in its production. And yet the few pages of facts and dates which form the backbone of the short Records of which the present volume is mainly composed, are the result of much careful research and painstaking verification. Research and verification in matters of history involve a considerable expenditure of time, coupled with a laudable display of patience and an entire devotion to his subject on the part of the compiler. These qualities were possessed in a high degree by my late colleague, Mr. HENRY MANNERS CHICHESTER, whose lamented death cast upon me the responsibility of completing and passing these Records through the press in successive issues of The Broad Arrow. The chapters in the Cavalry and Infantry portions of the book are mainly the work of Mr. CHICHESTER. His knowledge of all matters pertaining to military history, details of uniform, and army subjects generally, was unique. Indeed, he assisted in the preparation of some of the most important Regimental Histories which have issued from the press during the past few years, notably those of the 14th, 24th, 3oth, and 4oth Regiments, whilst at the time of his death he was engaged in the preparation of a history of his late regiment, the 85th, in which he held a commission for nearly ten years. These few words of tribute are due to the memory of an able and painstaking colleague. His death is not alone a personal loss, for with him vanishes a store of regimental and general military lore, which he was always ready to place at the disposal of others.   My next duty is to thank the many friends and officers who have voluntarily assisted me in this work I may especially mention the names of Major-General C. P. Forbes; Major-General Astley Ershie Ticut. Colonel Bridge, A.S.C. LieuteSolonel Everard, Worcestershire Regiment; Major Seton Churchill, A.P.D. Veterinary Lieut-Colonel Oliphant; and lastly Mr. Fitzalan Manners, Scots Guards, for the complete list of the Regimental, Battalion, and Company Badges ot the Brigade of Guards which will be found in the Appendix. This list, as will be seen on comparison, differs from that appearing in the chapters devoted to the several regiments of Guards in the body of the work. Indeed, since the compilation of those chapters the Badges of the Brigade have-I believe for the first time been put upon an authoritative basis and correctly described. It was not until April of the present year that a correct description of the Badges of each Battalion of the three Regiments of Foot Guards appeared in the Army List. All this is due to the energy and perseverance of Mr. Manners, who has of late years paid considerable attention to the interesting subjects of flags and badges. After a careful comparison of the Colour Book at the College of Arms with those in possession of the three Regiments of Guards, Mr. Manners has compiled the full list of Regimental, Battalion, and Company Badges which is appended to the present volume. This list is the more valuable as being the only accurate and complete one which has up to the present time been printed. For the interesting series of sketches of past uniforms I am indebted to Mr. Perceval Reynolds, whose antiquarian knowledge is happily coupled with much artistic skill. They may be regarded as absolutely correct both in detail-so far as the limited scale of the drawings admits-and in colour.
