    About this item

A very good example of a vintage Union Flag (most often referred to a as Union Jack) of traditional multi panel linen construction.

Overall condition is very good, the colours still bright and with minimal moth damage only, the stitching firm and with no tears.

Markings to the header are barely visible but I can just make out 6x3, its size in feet, approximately 183cms x 92cms. The rope remains in place in the header for attaching the Flag to the hoist.

The much used reference to the Union Flag being  the Union Jack, probably results from Charles IIs proclamation that the Union Flag should be flown only by ships of the Royal Navy as a jack, a small flag at the bowsprit; the term 'jack' once meant small.

Impossible to date accurately but certainly of the construction used in both wars and beyond but pre the introduction of the metric system in the UK in the 1960s.
