    About this item

A rare pair of original Great War period hopsack overalls made in Great Britain by 'Suspender'.

Suspender Brand were a prolific manufacturer of workwear in the UK in the first half of the 20th Century period. These overalls however must have been one of the most utilitarian designs they produced.  Made from a hessian, hop sack type material, these quite likely date from the First World War although could be earlier. The simple construction and cheap materials suggest these were mass produced, possibly as a stop-gap or because they were intended to have a short life and needed to be nothing more than functional.

The overalls feature a stand collar which is typical of the early part of the 20th Century. The front fastens with large metal buttons which are maker marked 'Suspender' which became 'Suspender Brand' in the inter-war period. Two more of these buttons are fitted onto each cuff. These fasten through a stitched loop as illustrated in the pictures and are testament to the very simple utility design. A large patch pocket is fitted to the left chest and there is another patch pocket located to the front of the right leg. There is also a reinforcing section to the seat which is illustrated in picture 10 and there is an opening at each hip to allow hand access to clothing worn underneath the overalls.

The overalls will suit around a 38" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat they measure -

    Chest - 23"
    Inside arm - 19 1/2"
    Outside arm - 24 1/2"
    Shoulders - 17 1/2"
    Inside leg - 28"

The overalls are in excellent condition and do not appear to have been worn in the lifetime. They could be described as deadstock and display extremely well. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-worn item which has some flaws commensurate with age.

A fantastic pair of super utilitarian overalls with some fantastic details.
