    About this item

A rare original Royal Air Force Football Association Referee's uniform which was made by 'Bukta' in the 1950s.

The RAF Football Association (RAFFA) was formed in 1920 and is a County Level organisation which is affiliated within the Football Association. It is still in operation today and this uniform belonged to a referee of the association.

The uniform is made from a black coloured nylon material and features removable cuffs and collar which are white. There is a short opening at the neck which fastens with an 'Aero' branded nickel plated zipper which is typical of the era. Breast pockets are fitted to the chest and fasten with black coloured plastic buttons. The right hand pocket features the RAF Football association breast patch whilst the other pocket features the Referees Association patch. Inside the shirt the original label is still present and is bright and legible. It bears the maker's name of 'Bukta' who were a prolific manufacturer of sportswear during the mid-Century period.

The shorts are cut in a typical 1950s manner with twin pleats to the front and an angled slash pocket to each hip. Waist adjusters are located to each hip and the inside of the waistband features a special lining which is intended to grip the wearer at the waist - both classic early 1950s features often seen in the very late 1940s. The fly fastens with buttons and the rear of the shorts features a single pocket.

The shirt will suit a 38" chest and the short a 28" waist and when laid flat they measure -

    Jacket
    Chest - 22 1/2"
    Inside arm - 19 3/4"
    Outside arm - 23"
    Shoulders - 18"
    Length at rear - 33 1/2"

    Shorts
    Waist - 14"
    Rise - 13"
    Rear rise - 17"
    Inside leg - 7"
    Outside leg - 18"
    Cuff - 11"

The uniform is in good condition with only limited signs of wear and age. Overall it displays well with no serious flaws or damage but please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small issues commensurate with age.

The suit comes complete with two match card books which were found in the pockets and therefore it is to be assumed belonged to the original owner.

A rare piece of early British sportswear with a military twist!
