    About this item

A rare original British Army 'Smock, Windproof Camouflage' dated 1943 which is in stunning unworn condition.

This pattern of smock was introduced in 1943 and saw widespread issue during 1944 and 1945 with a variety of units. Based on the same design as the earlier denim, drab and snow smocks; these camouflaged examples also proved popular in the post-war period and were used by French forces amongst others.

The smock is made from a lightweight gabardine which has the camouflaged pattern screen printed onto it. Due to the superb condition these colours are strong and bold and the material has a crisp sheen to it, as if it is new from the factory. It features four patch pockets to the front which all fasten with brown coloured vegetable ivory (plastic) buttons which is typical of early manufacture smocks. There is a hood which fastens with a drawstring and a larger drawstring is fitted to the bottom hem. The sleeves feature reinforcing patches made from the same material as the rest of the smock to the elbows, and there are adjustable tabs and buttons located to each cuff. Interestingly, the lower two pocket buttons have been replaced with 'Scovill' branded rivett style buttons.

Inside the smock the original label is still present and is bright and legible. It bears the title 'Smock Windproof' below which is the size of 5 which is designed to fit a 37" - 39" chest. It bears the maker's name of 'John Lee & Co' which is a rare maker to find and potentially accounts for the different shades in the camouflage pattern usually seen. The 1943 date is also present as is the War Department broad arrow marking.

When laid flat the smock measures -

    Chest - 28 1/2"
    Inside arm - 22"
    Outside arm - 22 1/4"
    Shoulders - 26 3/4"
    Length - 31"

The smock is in fantastic condition and would be very hard to better. It is still very wearable with no signs of previous wear and use with the only small alteration being the addition of the two lower pocket buttons. This is a true collectors example which is virtually flawless. The pictures do not do justice to what a fantastic smock this is. It is of course a vintage pre-worn item of clothing so please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

An iconic piece of camouflage uniform and a must have item for the serious collector!
