    About this item

An original early second Pattern RAF C-Type Flying Helmet in good condition and dating from the Second World War.

This pattern of helmet is sometimes referred to as the 'Second Pattern' C Type or, possibly more accurately, the first pattern internally wired C Type. This pattern was introduced in March 1944 replacing the earlier externally wired version and saw use throughout the rest of the conflict. The rear of the helmet features three straps which confirms this as a wartime helmet - The 5 strap version replaced this before the end of the war. This example features press studs to the right hand cheek rather than the sewn in metal oxygen mask clip which would suggest it is an early manufactured example.

The helmet is an extremely clean example overall and only has very limited signs of wear. The leather outer is in fine shape. It is still supple and pliable only having a couple of very small scuffs present. All the pop studs are present as are the goggle straps which are in excellent condition. The pop studs themselves still retain all their factory paint and the elastic chin strap is in good condition.

The Rubber headphone receiver cups are in excellent shape as is the original elasticated chin strap which is still the deep blue colour it was when it came out of the factory.

To the left hand side of the helmet the original Air Ministry stamp with crown is still visible, below which is the stores reference number. Inside the helmet the size stamp is present which are often missing on more worn examples. It states the size as No.3 - 7 1/8 to 7 1/2. The rest of the interior is very clean as can be seen in the photographs which show only limited signs of use.

Altogether a very clean example of a wartime C Type helmet which displays well. This would make an excellent addition to any RAF display or collection.
