    About this item

An original Royal Navy Surgeon Lieutenant's jacket and trousers in good condition.

This suit was made by Gieves and appears to be of WW2 vintage. The cut and construction are typical of the period although there is no date so the suit could date from the very early 1950s. The buttons would suggest it was made before 1953 and it is identical to wartime pattern.

Both parts are made from a black wool as was used during WW2. The jacket features a double breasted closure which fastens with brass buttons and peak lapels complete it. Bullion Lieutenant rank is located to each cuff which bears a red stripe denoting the medical branch. The jacket is cut short in the body as was popular during the 1930s and 1940s. The interior of the jacket is fully lined with a black coloured rayon material and features a single interior pocket. Inside this pocket is a label which features the makers name of 'Gieves' as well as the original owners name 'C. Robertson'.

The trousers are also typical of the period featuring a high rise waist, button fly and moderate fish tail rear. Slash pockets are located to each hip and the rear features a single pocket, as is common with British tailored items during this period. The front of the trousers features twin pleats and buttons are positioned around the top of the waistband to which braces can be attached.

The suit will fit someone of a 36" chest and a 31" waist. When laid flat it measures -

    Jacket
    Chest - 20"
    Inside arm - 19 1/2"
    Outside arm - 26"
    Shoulders - 18"
    Length - 30"

    Trousers
    Waist - 15 1/2"
    Inside leg - 31"

The overall condition of the suit is good. It displays well and is still very wearable although it has clearly seen plenty of use in its day. The jacket has a repair to the chest near the right arm hole (picture 6) and a small section of stitching has come away at the lapel (picture 7) although this is only noticeable on close inspection. The lining of the jacket has a few nicely done period repairs and there is wear around the interior button (picture 9). Please study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind this is a pre-worn, vintage item with small issues commensurate with age.

A nice original suit which would suit a reenactor or could be a nice addition to a collection.
