About this item

Rare original German photographic album dating from the Third Reich period, containing an extensive and highly evocative series of privately taken photographs documenting an official visit or organised event involving SS/NSDAP personnel, civilian dignitaries, physical training displays, equestrian demonstrations and social functions, together with photographs relating to Neidenburg in East Prussia.

A fascinating untouched period album containing a substantial collection of original black-and-white photographs, apparently assembled contemporaneously and retained in their original sequence.

The album begins with a particularly interesting series showing a large modern German institutional complex. Amongst the earliest photographs is a striking monumental figure of a male athlete or warrior carrying a sword, photographed from several viewpoints.

The following pages provide an extensive photographic record of activities taking place within the complex. These include organised mass physical training, gymnastics, medicine-ball exercises, vaulting and other demonstrations carried out before assembled spectators.

A considerable number of photographs show an official visit or inspection, with civilian dignitaries accompanied by uniformed German officials. Several images clearly show Nazi Party uniforms and swastika armbands.

The visit appears to progress through different demonstrations and areas of the establishment, giving the album an unusually strong documentary quality rather than being simply a random collection of German wartime photographs.

Equestrian section

Another substantial sequence records mounted activities.

These photographs include uniformed riders on horseback, assembled horses and riders, jumping demonstrations and spectators watching the proceedings. Several images show officials apparently inspecting or observing the mounted displays.

The combination of equestrian and organised physical training is particularly interesting and may ultimately assist in identifying the establishment pictured.

SS & official reception photographs

Perhaps the most striking section of the album records a formal indoor reception or dinner.

Numerous men and women are photographed seated at candlelit tables alongside uniformed officials.

Of particular note is an excellent close portrait of a uniformed SS member, clearly displaying SS collar and uniform insignia, together with a swastika armband.

Other photographs show uniformed men seated amongst civilian guests, speeches being made and what appears to have been the formal social conclusion to an organised visit or event.

No attempt has been made to identify the individuals pictured, and further research may prove rewarding.

Neidenburg, East Prussia – dated 11 July 1934

Towards the end of the album are photographs associated with Neidenburg (Nidzica), East Prussia, including a view of the town's market square and Rathaus.

Most importantly, the reverse of one surviving postcard carries contemporary handwritten identification referring to:

“Marktplatz mit Rathaus in Neidenburg/Ostpr.”

A pasted contemporary typed photographic annotation additionally reads:

“Marktplatz Neidenburg. 11.7.34.”

providing a firm date of 11 July 1934 for this particular element of the collection.

The same label also contains photographic/archive-style references including “Negative ebendort” and “Auswertung nach Belieben”, an intriguing feature which raises the possibility that at least some of the material had a photographic, press or archival purpose rather than being purely conventional holiday snapshots.

The 11 July 1934 date should, however, be regarded as applying to the identified Neidenburg material rather than automatically dating the entire album.

Military photograph

Also included towards the end is a striking photograph showing a German heavy anti-aircraft/artillery piece with its crew in the field.

The album consequently encompasses an unusually broad range of subjects:

Nazi Party and SS personnel official visits and civilian dignitaries a large unidentified institutional/training complex Nazi insignia and uniforms organised physical-training demonstrations gymnastics and athletics equestrian and mounted demonstrations formal receptions and dinners East Prussia Neidenburg / Nidzica military artillery / anti-aircraft material contemporary photographic annotations.

The photographs appear to be original period prints rather than later reproductions, and importantly remain together in the album in what appears to be their original sequence.

The album itself is heavily age worn, with considerable wear, staining, losses and deterioration to the covers and page edges. Individual photographs show varying degrees of age-related wear, creasing, surface marks and occasional damage, all entirely commensurate with a photographic album approaching a century old.

Despite the condition of the album, many individual photographs remain remarkably clear and contain considerable uniform, architectural and social detail.

An unusual and potentially researchable original Third Reich photographic archive which deserves further investigation, particularly regarding the unidentified establishment, officials and occasion depicted.

Dating

Circa mid-1930s, with at least one section firmly dated 11 July 1934.

The location name Neidenburg is historically consistent with the period: the town was then in East Prussia and is modern Nidzica in Poland. I haven't found sufficient external evidence to responsibly identify the principal establishment from the photographs alone, so I would deliberately leave that as unidentified in the listing rather than weaken it with a speculative attribution.
