By mid 1919 protagonists of the Great War were again finding themselves obliged to choose sides. British troops from Mesopotamia, (itself in political ferment weighing potential Mandate under Britain against immediate independence), were detached to Northern Persia to assist in the defence of newly formed indepedent regional republics fighting against centralist Bolshevik armies, seeking to coerce them into yet another Russian empire.
