  The foreword states;   This book makes no claim to be more than a “collection of miscellaneous sketches and verses drawn and written as time permitted and the spirit urged at intervals over the greater period of the war years. Some of them have already appeared in the pages of "Punch"- Old Comrades, The Occasional Admiral, The Nelson Room, St. George- His Day, Naval Wings, Amongst Those Present, The Long Stand-to, Admiralty, and (in an abbreviated form) A Rose for Minden-and I gratefully acknowledge the kindness of the Proprietors in permitting their re-publication. Others were born apparently to blush unseen until a friend who knew about publishing and all that said "You ought to stick them in a book." So here goes. Those which have already been published appeared to give some pleasure to a number of people. It is my very great hope that their re-publication with others in book form may be equally acceptable. J.
