About this item

A fantastic WW2 1944-45 RAF tactical air force photo album. This photo album came to me with some other affects with an RAF logbook group. It was not related to that grouping so I have decided to sell it. From what I can tell this is possibly a member of an RAF radio communications person, who was part of the RAFs tactical air force. If you look at the photos there are several photos of RAF lorries that are marked "TAF". There are also several photos that have what looks like radio masts or towers set up at "BARAQUE", so I can only assume the person who put this together was a part of that group.

What makes this album even more interesting is it seems this person was in Belgium during December 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge. There are several photos that are annotated saying "Retreat from Manhay" and "Bastogne Road". I can again only assume when the German attack came they had to pack up and evacuate to safer areas. Once the battle was finished and the German attack repulsed, it seems this person and the RAF unit he was in then moved back through the battlefields. There are around 10-15 photos of the "Battlefield at Grandmenil". I believe Grandmenil was witness to a very furious fight between American units and the German Das Reich division on Christmas night, the German attack being repulsed. In the album, there are several photos where the RAF chap has visited the battlefield, and the remains of as he puts it "REMAINS of RUNDSTEDTS PANZERS at GRANDMENIL" are visible. This includes tanks, I believe a Panther tank is photographed upside down, and there is also I believe a Stug III in the photos. Also remains of American tanks, vehicles, warning signs, and more.

So really good photos worthy of further investigation and research. There is also further photos in the album of family members, visiting and passing through other towns in Europe during WW2. There are some missing photos and empty pages as well. Approximately 50 photos altogether and around 10-15 from the Battle of the Bulge period.

Overall then a fantastic original WW2 1944-45 photo album, put together by an RAF tactical air force member. Worthy of further research. Perfect for any WW2 collection, museum, or display.
