About this item
1951 Pattern RAF Extreme Cold Weather Parka - sz large. As used by RAF aircrew in extremely cold weather climates. This parka was the pinnacle in cold weather parka design, and as such is now a very popular piece of vintage military clothing. Made from the ever-popular RAF blue/grey ventile material it provides some water-resistant properties as well as being wind proof. As the name suggests, designed in 1951 this parka was used right up to the 1980s, being reissued in a green color as well in the 1970s. A real piece of classic British design.
This example is in pretty good used condition, it is slightly grubby from use so would benefit from a dry clean. The material however without any damage or issues we can see. The parka is complete with its belt, and all buttons in place. The zip is marked "FLASH" on the puller and works nicely. The hood with all wooden toggles, it is nicely lined with soft brown fur in excellent condition. The hood originally would have been trimmed with fur, this is now absent. Again we have seen other examples with this fur removed, possibly a personal preference.
Inside unfortunately the label has been removed, mostly likely by the previous owner, we have seen this on several examples, again possibly where the original wearer liberated it from RAF stores! Nonetheless, it is interestingly marked "COTTESMORE", which could relate to the RAF base that was there. Without a label, we do not know the size so we have measured it and these are the following measurements below:
Chest 28 inches across
Shoulder to shoulder 23 inches
Shoulder to cuff 26 inches
Armpit to cuff 20 inches
Waist 24 inches
neck to bottom hem 40 inches
So safe to assume a size large parka. Overall a very nice parka, ideal for any classic British clothing collection, RAF collection, display or use.
