About this item

A very rare original Royal Air Force MK7 Immersion Suit Blouse which dates from the 1960s.

Officially designated 'Immersion Suit MK7 Blouse', these smock type jackets were produced as part of a two piece set with matching wader style trousers. It was designed as a waterproof dry suit to protect RAF aircrew when ditching in the sea. It was intended to protect from extreme cold for up to 6 hours in water.

The jacket is made from a double layer ventile cotton which was a popular choice for RAF clothing during this period. Two angled flapped pockets are located to the front which both fasten with a single button. There is a large cowl style hood which features a wire inside the brim which allows it to be shaped. When worn for flying, the hood is tightly rolled up and fastened across the shoulders with plastic press studs. There is a large collar latch which fastens at the neck and there is a white drawstring with wooden toggle also present at the hood. A pen pocket is located to the upper portion of the left sleeve which is a typical feature of flying jackets from this period.

Inside the jacket features a rubber collar and waistband as well as cuffs which are designed to waterproof the wearer by sealing tightly. The original maker's label is still present and bears the maker's name of 'Frankenstein Group Ltd'. Often referred to as P. Frankenstein Ltd' of Victoria Rubber Works, Manchester, this maker was prolific in specialist RAF survival equipment from around the end of the Second World War and for many decades which followed.

This is a very rare and sought after jacket which is missing from many collections.
