    About this item

An original pre Second World War Royal Navy Tropical Flannel, often referred to as a 'white top'.

This pattern of top features a spine pad which denotes it as a tropical issue item. These went out of service in 1938 and the standard flannel which was already in issue replaced it. The idea of spine pads dates back to the 19th century with this item being one of the last in service to have such a feature.

The top is made from a white cotton drill and features an open, square shaped neck which is finished with blue cotton.

What is particularly nice about this example is that it is private purchase. It features a makers label which bears the graphic of a three leaf clover and the name 'The Emerelda' and is typical of the era.

The top is cut wide across the chest and shoulders as it has to be pulled on over the head. When laid flat it measures -

    Chest - 26"
    Length - 32"
    Shoulders - 23 1/2"

The flannel is in reasonable condition for its age with some marks and staining. Please study the pictures provided.

All in all a nice private purchase example with a great label!
