    About this item

A scarce original British Army West African pattern khaki drill shirt which dates from the inter-war period.

The tunic is made from the standard khaki coloured cotton drill used for many decades in Great Britain for workwear as well as clothing worn by the military in the tropics. It is an utilitarian design which features a half placket front which is pulled on over the head in the same manner as men's shirts from the first half of the 20th Century. It fastens with two large King's crown Royal Artillery buttons and there is no collar. Two patch pockets are located to the front and feature pointed pocket flaps which again fasten with brass RA pattern buttons. There is a double layer over the shoulders and epaulettes are present and fitted with Royal Artillery 'RA' shoulder titles. The cuffs feature a button hole each along with two extra holes through which the shank of a button can be fitted, although no have been to this jacket. It is possible these buttons have been added.

There are no labels or stamps that I can find inside the shirt although there is a First Field Dress pocket to the skirt as is typical found on British military tunics from this era. The original owner has also added the last three digits of his serial number in ink using a letterset.

The shirt is cut wide in the body being of half placket design so will suit around a 38" chest depending on desired fit. When laid flat it measures -

    Chest - 22"
    Inside arm - 19 1/2"
    Outside arm - 24 1/2"
    Shoulders - 17"
    Length at rear - 26"

The tunic is in good condition overall with various signs of wear and age. It displays well with no serious flaws or damage but there is staining etc. Please take time to study these before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage item with small issues commensurate with age.

A rare piece of British military KD clothing!
