About this item
An original 1943dated RAF OA side cap in a good size 7 1/8.
These caps came into issue with the RAF shortly before the Second World War and were worn by all airmen of the rank of Flight Sergeant and below. It is now an iconic piece of wartime RAF clothing synonymous with both Sergeant Aircrew and ground crew alike.
This particular example is typical of wartime manufacture. It is made from RAF blue-grey coloured wool serge and features a brass Kings crown cap badge and two brass kings crown buttons to the front.
The interior of the cap retains its original yellow manufacturers stamp which is typical of mid to late war caps. It has somewhat faded with time but some of the details are still legible including the size of 7 1/8. The maker's name of 'A. J. Gelfer' is also present as is the War Department broad arrow marking. There is also a War Department acceptance stamp which is surmounted by the letter 'N' which denotes the year of issue as 1943.
The condition of the cap is good for its age as can be seen in the pictures. It shows only limited signs of wear and use and displays well with no major flaws aside from one small moth nip to the rear as pictured. Please study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-owned item which may have small issues commensurate with age.
Altogether a nice original wartime RAF OA cap in a good wearable size.
