About this item
The British War Medal was a campaign medal issued to British military personnel who served in World War I. The medal was typically awarded to soldiers who served in a theatre of war or who served overseas between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918.
The medal awarded to 27763 J.T. Gilroy of the Leicester Regiment would indicate that he served during World War I. The Leicester Regiment was a British Army infantry regiment that served on the Western Front in France and Flanders during the war, as well as in other theatres such as Egypt and Mesopotamia.
The award of the British War Medal to J.T. Gilroy would indicate that he saw active service during the war, likely serving in one or more of the major campaigns fought by the Leicester Regiment.
