About this item
Correctly named Thomas Y Purvis.
Thomas Young Purvis was born in Durham in 1877 to James and Elizabeth.
A life time at sea awaited Thomas as we first find him as a seaman in 1891 whilst living at home with his parents at Baring Street, South Shields. His father is an apprentice Pilot at this time, the trade that Thomas would follow into.
He married Elizabeth Smith in 1909 and by 1911, he is now working as a River Tyne Pilot and living at 50 Blumers Terrace in South Shields.
We know he served through WWI as a Tyne Pilot and earned himself the BWM as well as the Mercantile Marine Medal (not present).
In 1939, he is living at 61 Sunderland Road, South Shields and still working as a River Tyne Pilot.
We were lucky in our research to find a website 'TYNE AREA SHIPPING CLUB' in which we found a photo of Thomas outside the Pilot House.
From the same website, we note that there were four generations of 'Purvis' pilots, a true family vocation.
Thomas died in 1949.
The medal has a modern replacement ribbon.
