About this item
Rare Candlesticks from the HMS Ganges. These rare candlesticks are made of teak and come from the HMS Ganges - the last sailing ship to serve as a seagoing flagship.
HMS Ganges was a significant vessel and training establishment in the history of the Royal Navy. The name was associated with several ships and a shore-based training facility over nearly two centuries.
The first HMS Ganges was a 74-gun ship originally named Bengal, built by the East India Company and presented to the British Government in 1779. It served for 34 years, including involvement in Admiral Lord Nelson's fleet against the Danes, before being broken up in 1816.
The most notable HMS Ganges was an 84-gun second-rate ship of the line, launched on November 10, 1821, at Bombay Dockyard. Constructed from teak, this Ganges was the last sailing ship of the Navy to serve as a flagship. It saw action in various locations, including the Mediterranean from 1838 to 1840, where it bombarded Beirut and blockaded Alexandria.
