About this item
A really poignant grouping of items, sent home from the Boer War at Christmas 1900 , from a soldier for his infant children, Lawrie and Alex, written from Camp Maitland, Cape Town, South Africa on the 13th of December 1899.
Each child recieved a letter, and a piece of Khaki cloth with a printed message and a quote from Rudyard Kipling to the front, and a dedication from thier father in red ink to the rear. Presumably they also recieved the tin, and the chocolate to share! Also in the tin were some "everlasting silver leaves" a popular souviner from Table Mountain, one of which is dedicated to Alex, and an Invitation to a "Social" at the Observatory Wesleyan Church in Milton Road Aberdeen, dated May 1900.
One can only wonder if this Scottish soldier made it back to see his wee ones at the war's end. I hope so.
