WW1 Sterling Silver Soldiers’ Club Box. This Soldier’s Club, Hull Silver Box has a colour Union Jack flag emblem on the hinged lid. It is engraved “awarded to J.S. Burnett, Esq in recognition of valuable services 1914-1918 by Major A J Atkinson, Chairman”. Hallmarked. Lined in wood and measuring 180mm x 90mm x 60mm.
During wartime, soldiers' clubs were established to provide recreational facilities and support to troops. Special items like this sterling silver cigarette box were either awarded as honours or produced as commemorative pieces for members of these clubs.
