About this item
United States WW2 Military Survival Matchstick Holder with Compass on lid.
Constructed in brown Bakelite this ingenious piece provided not only a waterproof matchstick holder but combined a useful Taylor compass in the lid.
Measuring 79mm in length it has a ribbed body for easy gripping and a striker bar in the base which also carries the US mark.
Overall condition is very good, the compass still working, the Bakelite without damage but with loss to the striking compound in the base.
Perhaps of more general distribution, these were known to have been used by USAAF and later USAF personnel and was typically included in survival kits like the C-1 vest, E-3 sustenance kit, or multi-person life rafts.
